We continued with our Shoe theme this week and started learning about families. Students have been learning about family members care for each other. We read books about families, worked on developing vocabulary, sequencing order of events in stories, and learned about how people change and learn as the grow from child to adult. Some of the skills we focused on this week include:

During Week Four, we started a new theme and it is "Shoes." This may seem strange, but to four and five-year-olds shoes are exciting! We have been using the shoe theme across the curriculum and will continue with this theme for the next couple weeks. Some of the skills we worked on this past week include:
Week two has gone well! Students are becoming familiar with routines and are learning our schedule. We have added classroom jobs this week and will be adding more next week. Students absolutely loved going to Music and Art!
Some of the things we learned/did this week:
Small Groups this week:
I know that many of you must be curious as to what your children have been doing in Pre-K this week. Although we are still spending a lot of time learning routines, I was sure to get a lot of pictures this week to give you a look inside our classroom. It is very typical for children at this age to respond to the question, "What did you do today at school today?" with "I played in Blocks" or "I played with the babies." Four and five-year-olds tend to share the highlight of their day. That is why I will be using this blog as a newsletter to keep parents updated on concepts we are learning as well as important events. It can be hard to leave mom and dad, especially after a long summer or a break from school. We hope that your child has had an exciting first week and that they are even more excited to return on Monday!
Our lessons will be theme based. During Curriculum Night, we will provide you with an understanding of the topics of study and the Georgia Early Learning and Development (GELDS) standards used in Pre-K. Weeks 1-3 are focused on the topic: My School/My Friends This past week students learned about:
Students have been learning about motion the past two weeks during our Make It Move Unit. You may heave heard your child singing the "A Push or a Pull" song. Students have been learning about forces, direction of movement, friction, and different ways things can move. Students also learned how the shape of objects can determine how they move (ex: circular objects roll- flat objects slide). In Math, we have been learning about measurement, addition, and number recognition skills. Students have continued to work on letter formation and alphabet knowledge.
This past week, students learned about reflections. They learned vocabulary words: smooth, shiny, dull, mirror, and reflection and how they relate to the ability to see a reflection. Students explored sound in small group this week by using objects to create different sounds. Students also guessed objects inside tubes by listening to the sounds the objects created. Students also worked on creating an alternative ending to the story "Happy Birthday, Moon" and found sight words in their dictated responses. In math this week, we revisited 2D shapes and worked on identifying shapes by counting the number of sides.During Week 31, students learned about shadows and what makes shadows change. They really loved using a flashlight during small groups this week to create a shadow puppet and then coloring their shadow on paper. We even had an experiment where we took a block outside in the morning and traced the shadow and then returned at noon to see how the shadow changed size and direction!
Skills we worked on this week include: Second Step Social Skills- Breathing Techniques (S.T.A.R. and Pretzel) to help us calm down and refocus (ask your child to show you the S.T.A.R, especially if they need to get calm) Math- Addition problems, stories and sentences. Counting out objects carefully to represent numerals (one-to-one correspondence), describing the location of objects using positional words, creating a map of our room Language and Literacy- Vocabulary relating to shadows- noon, shorter, taller, between, light (the different sources that create light), letter recognition, letter formation, identifying words with the same beginning sound, reading, retelling, and acting out "Goldilocks and The Three Bears" Science- Exploring and investigating shadows Next week, we will learn about reflections! During Week 30, students learned about shadows and what makes shadows change. Students have been on the lookout for their shadows inside, outside, and possibly at home too:) They really loved using a flashlight during morning meeting this week to create a butterfly or crocodile shadow puppet.
