Week 27 was filled with Dr. Seuss themed math activities. Students sorted and graphed goldfish in a One Fish, Two Fish math activity, practiced positional words in a Go Dog, Go themed lesson, and predicted whether or not they would like Green Eggs in Ham and then checked their predictions. We learned about seasons this week, and next week we will focus on how to take care of the Earth.

We have continued learning about our Earth & Sky unit. Week 26 focused on weather types and what happens when the weather changes. Some of the skills we focused on these past two weeks include:
Second Step Social Skills- Solving problems Small groups: Day/night sort, "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" and the different times of day/sun position Science vocabulary- weather, wind, rain, cloud, lightning, thunder, storm Phonological Awareness- Blending CVC words with the letters C, O, A, D, G, M, L, H, and T Alphabet Knowledge- We introduced work on handwriting skills through a "morning work" assignment where students use dry-erase markers to practice tracing their first and last names and rewriting their first and last names independently. Math- Ten frame math (quickly identifying sets using ten frame, representing numerals on the ten frame, and ten frame addition sentences) Week 24 was all about Friendship and Dental Health. Students loved sharing their Valentine's Day boxes and distributing their valentines to classmates. We began a new unit focusing on the theme "Earth and Sky" on Tuesday. Over the past two weeks, we worked on the following skills:
Second Step Social Skills- Speaking up assertively Dental Health- How can we take care of our teeth? Identifying "healthy" and "unhealthy" foods Small Groups- Read and retelling "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," Day/Night sort, Cycle of the Sun (sunrise, sunset, morning, afternoon) Math- Sharing equally (vocabulary- same, more, less) Science- What happens when day changes to night? Character Word- Honesty (discussed different ways to be honest) Phonological Awareness- Letter sounds and isolating beginning sounds Friendship- How to be a good friend The past two weeks students learned about the desert biome. Students learned that it is hot and dry and very different from the rain forest. We focused on the following vocabulary terms: sun, dry, sand, desert, rocks, cactus, and nocturnal. We worked on the following skills:
Second Step Social Skills- Saying the problem Book Study- "The Gingerbread Cowboy" We created a story map and compared this story to the original "The Gingerbread Man" Oral Language- Sorting jungle and desert words and images Alphabet Knowledge- We focused on beginning sounds Math- Continued 3D shapes Science- Desert animals (coyote, javelina, roadrunner, and horned lizard) New Character Trait- Honesty Our theme next week will be dental health and friendship. This week students learned about the desert biome. Students learned that it is hot and dry and very different from the rain forest. We focused on the following vocabulary terms: sun, dry, sand, desert, rocks, cactus.
Second Step Social Skills- Saying the problem Book Study- "Two Cool Coyotes" We focused on the story elements "problem" in the story and the "feelings" of the characters throughout the story. On the 100th Day of School, students made hats, counted to 100, did 100 exercises, and students gave responses for: "When I am 100..." Next week, students will be able to answer the question, "What are desert animals like?" Orton Gillingham Phonics letters: c, o, a, d, g, l, m Math: 3-D shapes (sphere, cylinder, cube) Homework to find one of these objects at home and send in a picture to make a class 3-D shape recognition activity and book Small Groups: Learning about the cactus plant and creating a Play-Doh cactus, "What If You Had Animal Teeth?" response, letter sound and beginning sound practice. Students learned about different jungle animals this week. Students enjoyed learning about the chameleon after reading fictional and informational texts about the chameleon. We had a great first week back! We completed a week long unit on Winter and revisited our class rules. Some of the skills we worked on this week include:
It was a busy week with several Music rehearsals. Students are excited and ready for you to watch them perform in the Holiday Show on Thursday @ 9:00am. This week we learned about the jobs of several community helpers. Our main focus was on the job of a firefighter and doctor. Students learned how firefighters keep us safe and are prepared to go out to respond to a fire at all times. Skills we worked on this week:
This week students learned about the places in their community. We turned our dramatic play into a hot chocolate stand! We will be practicing on the big stage next week for our big show on 12/19 &12/20 @ 9:00 a.m.
